An Early Winter Texas Family Session

Nayna and Josh’s Family Portrait Session at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve
I truly love early December in Texas. The trees are slightly holding onto their fall color and the air is typically mild. On this particular day, the whole evening had that cozy, early mild winter energy. After leaving 15-degree weather in Denver a few days prior, stepping into a 55-degree Texas day felt like such a welcome change.
A Candid Approach to Family Photos
This family leaned into a natural, candid approach for their photos, which is exactly how I love to photograph families. As a Colorado Family Photographer, my focus is always on connection over perfection. I want sessions to feel relaxed and organic, allowing families to simply be together without forced posing. Those real, unscripted moments are always the most meaningful.
One of my favorite parts of family sessions is watching how curious kids are. I let them explore, move, and interact with their surroundings while we play with them and keep things fun. This approach helps kids feel comfortable and lets their personalities shine. That playful, documentary-style storytelling is at the core of my work as a Colorado Family Photographer, no matter where I’m shooting.
This shoot was extra special because I’ve known Nayna since our high school days, and capturing her beautiful family felt incredibly full-circle. Her girls are absolutely adorable, and documenting their connection was such a joy.
While I’m based in Colorado, I make it back to Dallas about once a year and love scheduling sessions during those trips. If you’re hoping to book me as your Family Photographer while I’m in Texas, be sure to follow me on Instagram at @caraelizphoto for announcements about upcoming trips and availability.
